Hidatakayama

In Takayama, a city that, due to high altitude and separation from other areas of Japan kept the area fairly isolated, allowing Takayama to develop its own culture over about a 300-year period. Here you will find charming machiyas (traditional townhouses,) sake brewers, miso shops etc. The gassho-zukuri areas around Shirakawa Lake are registered as World Heritage site and are beautiful.
