The Dejima Island served as Japan's only window of trade with the western world for about 200 years during its perod of isolation. The Dejima Dutch Trading Post site is designated as a National Historic Site. Dejima was restored by Nagasaki City. Because the word ”jima” means ”island”, many people are surprised that it is not an island but is located on ordinary flat land. The surrounding area of Dejima was reclaimed and it is said that it was already in its current state by the Meiji period.
